Credit: BBCSo says Kurbanguly Berdymukhamedov, Turkmenistan's new president, who has been paid the supreme compliment by one resident quoted in today's BBC analysis, "Somehow he seems much more Soviet."

Despite promises of loyalty to the late Turkmenbashi in a succession that lacked any of the drama of neighbouring Iraq's leadership transition, the former dentist has given real grounds for optimism about the authoritarian nation's future.

Did you see the interview with Hans Blix on Sky? He says "everything in Iraq after the invasion has been a tragedy" and accuses Bliar's government of exercising spin, replacing question marks with exclamation marks.
